Gitbox App Reviews

Leave a review? Here it is.

I honestly like the app. What I do NOT like is being prompted by apps for leaving a review. It is annoying, expecially from an app I paid, and even more for an app I use to work.

AWESOME

AWESOME

Great App. Needs Attention

Gitbox is a wonderful app and that is truly “simple” and even makes the methods and workflows of git clear to new and vetern users. I’ve used it for a few years now and have no plans to stop. My only criticisim is that the app no longer recieves attention. It is very stable and doesn’t need any overhauls but does need some updating for the latest OS. But so long as it continues to work I will continue to use it. Best git app out there.

The best Git client that will never be updated again

This is by far my favorite Git client. It shows how git works conceptually for day to day development: branching, merging, patching, cherry picking, etc. Left is always your local branch. Right is your target branch (local or remote). Blue commits are commits that are on the target branch but not on your local branch. Green commits are ones that are on your branch and not the target branch. Super simple and very powerful. In a world where most git clients seem to have been written by super nerds who just can’t help but include every posssible git flag and visualization in their interfaces, this is a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, it will also never been updated again. It’s been three years, and the developer has fallen off the face of the planet. I even emailed him about a year ago kindly asking that he consider open sourcing the project. So, use it while it works. It’s not without bugs, but it is my daily ride or die.

Used to be great, no longer maintained

This used to be my go-to Git app, but unfortunately it is no longer maintained. It seems to be incompatible with the latest XCode in that it launches un-killable FileMerge instances. The developer is unresponsive. Unfortunately, this means I can no longer use this app. I would now instead suggest the (free) Github for Mac app.

OK, but laborious

It needs to be able to traverse a folder for all repositories in sub folders so that setting up a new machine with clones is quick and easy. It also fails to get files for clone attemps, but gives no error. I want to know why my clones are empty. I used trial and error to resolve, but now my repositories have moved and it won’t clone them; pretends to, but no files and no errors.

Need update

Is about time for an update

Best One Yet

I can count on one hand the number of apps that have compelled me to actually write a review. GitBox is one. Despite having a few minor things that could be improved, this is hand down the fastest and easiest Git client I have used yet. I have always been a CLI guy, but after getting this, I find myself in here more and more. Primarily because I can manage my commit much faster. The keyboard shortcuts are awesome. "D" = diff, "S" stage, "CMD+Return" commit, etc. These all allow me to be more organized with my commits and be faster. I still use the CLI for things like deploying etc, but now I have this up right next to it. A couple things I would like to see: - An option to create your own shortcuts. - As mentioned by others, more verification for destructive actions, BUT allow them to be suppressed. I am sure there a couple more things I just cant remember. I will update this as I remember. Keep up the great work.

I’ve stopped using anything else, works great!

This is a simple but perfect app for basic GIT operations. Takes the hassle out of command line and XCODE alternatives.

Major flaw. Wont fully utilize git

Before downloading this, you should note its limitation. I have the unfortunate experience of learning this too late. It does not seem to support all feature of git. - It doesnt recognize all the options for git such as remote.<alias>.pushurl. Therefore, though you can modify the .git/config in gitbox, it will not recognize all the parameters. - You cant customize your "refspec" on the push command. If you need the above customization, I suggest you avoid this product.

Perfect GUI addition for a *mostly* CLI user

I mostly work with git on the command line but sometimes it is nice to have a GUI for better visualization. This is a fantastic, well-priced app for that purpose.

Awsome App - Missing Documentation

Only reason I took 1 star off is because there is literally no documentation for this tool. While it is mostly intuitive it can sometimes be confusing as to how it handles mereged and unmerged files and stashing. Could use some documentation to aleviate some frustration with trial and error during a project. This by no means says you shoudnt buy it because you totaly should, it is my favorite GIT client and I have tried a few and I have never had an issue with it crashing, malfunctioning or anything else. Awesome tool, and youve made a mistake if you passed it up.

Nice Addition to the Command Line

I still use the command line quite a bit, and I probably have to get into gitbox more. Im giving this 5 stars because I actually use it.

Simply Simple

The simplicity and intuitive interface lets those who have not yet mastered the flexibility fo GIT benifit from its power. AWESOME !!

Please FIX

GitBox stopped working about 2 weeks ago for me. It shows no activity for any repositories and I’ve tried re-installing, clearing cache, etc…

I like it, but will it ever be updated again?

Outstanding App

Really clean and crisp design, all the clutter removed, and yet really functional. Automatic fetch of updates on the server is great, makes it so easy to stay in sync.

Very good, but missing handy features

This is my favorite tool for GIT, but I often forget to include JIRA tag into my commit comments, and I have to run ‘git commit —amend’ or perform shaman dances in command prompt to change my comment. It would extremely good if I could edit comment right in Gitbox.

1.6.3 - Unreliable

This version of this app is no longer reliable. There is a bug that “bricks” it, I call it the “Blank Window Bug,” and the developer has known about it for months. While there’s a solution for it, posted on the app’s Twitter account, there’s no guarantee it’s going to work. An update for Gitbox is long overdue. If you see the last update, it was almost two years ago. While this is by far my favorite Git client, even cleaner, easier to use and more intuitive than the expensive, full-featured Tower, I can’t recommend this version of the app anymore. I consider it broken. Download at your own risk.

Great except for the occasional removal of all repository info

Lately I’ve been losing ALL of my respository info from within the app. One day everything is fine, and then all of a sudden the next time I open up Gitbox there are no repositories at all. Very frustrating as I have MANY groups setup and configured how I like it.
