Gitbox App Reviews

Nice app

Good application in general! But I got some troubles using keys instead of passwords (like on Github for example). If the application does not find the key in the keychain it just load forever and you do not know why... If you try in command line you have an error: Permission denied (publickey). And you know how to fix the problem with a simple git-add. An error message could be good to inform the user in this case!

Nice app, some glitches

Nice app that makes GitHub even easier to use. However, some glitches here and there make it unstable.

Straight & simple

Gitbox hits a sweet spot of GUI based git apps: It manages to be very very fast (hotkeys everywhere!). At the same time the visuals are quicker to parse than most of the CLI clients output.

makes working with repos very easy

the only thing that I dont get is how rebase works. In my case it has absolutely no effect. But for the rest its a very helpful tool, I especially like the Cmd+Z option. I can definitely recommend it.

diff view!

i love the look and feel but the missing **integrated** diff view is crap. having to press the d key, wait for another app, is just ridiculous and a pain in my ass. stuck with gitx for now.

Great tool

I use it every day and I have no complaints

Not a replacement for GitX yet...

Ive been using GitX for ages now, and Im quite happy with it, but as others have mentioned its not a complete solution… you still have to drop into the Terminal to push / pull / revert files etc. Gitbox solves this problem with a good UI for pushing, pulling, and reviewing branches and commits. Great! I love it! However, without a built-in diff viewer it doesnt fit in to my workflow at all. I make multiple changes to files, and then break those changes into small commits. If you work like this, you wont be able to use Gitbox. If you do a single change, then commit, you can probably make Gitbox work for you. Ill be waiting on a diff viewer, until then its back to GitX.

Handy

I leave it open and I can see when colleagues push to the repo. In most cases, I can commit, push, and pull with one button, just as it advertises. I havent used its other features much, but 80% of the time it does the exact thing I want it to do with a moinimum of effort.

Needs inline diff viewer, other than that, great product

Really great software, but it needs an inline diff viewer. Im using the Kaleidoscope integration, which is great, but for quick scans of changes GitX really has a great solution.

Disappointed with lack of features

I usually use the Magit extension for Emacs which works great, but sometimes it isnt obvious or convenient to do slightly off-the-path git operations. I generally use GitX as an alternative and was hoping that a paid app like Gitbox would be more feature complete. Well its not from the features that I wanted it for. For example, amazingly, you cant even amend a commit with Gitbox. It also crashes all the time even when its just sitting in the background (I would have forgotten this detail except that it crashed again while I was typing this review!!). Im probably being generous with 2 stars. Save your money and use GitX or Terminal.

Good, used daily, but...

I use Gitbox every day and it has become an essential part of my routine. Beware, though, as version 1.5.1 has a bug that makes stashing very cumbersome. The latest version, 1.5.2, fixes that but is--as of this writing--only available from the developers site, i.e., not from the AppStore. Therefore, a purchase made here would be unseen by any version downloaded from elsewhere, say the developers site. I have written twice to the developer about this, asking him to update the AppStore version, but he has not responded. So, beware.

Simple in the best way

While this isnt the most robust Git GUI app out there (see Tower), Gitbox is an incredibly intuitive and easy to use app. The fact that the only UI elements present are the required ones makes for a really clean interface, which I love. The first time I tried to stage multiple files, it took me a bit to figure out that I had to highlight all files, then right click and select "Stage" was a bit cumbersome, otherwise its super!

Excellent app, good update

This is the best visual Git client I know of, and in the latest update the author fixed an important bug that I emailed him about. I now depend on this app for my workflow. The only thing Im wishing for is a built-in diff viewer, though Gitbox does make adequate use of BBEdit to do this for now.

Sure makes using git much easier

This is a way better than using the command-line. Love it. Highly recommended for all developers.

So minimal, so awesome.

Seriously, just buy it.

immature product, a bit flaky

I can’t imagine why GitBox is getting a bunch of 5-star ratings. It’s a nice start, but it’s nowhere near polished. It’s buggy. There are lots of limitations still. Many things about the UI are unclear … and if a gui can’t be be a clear improvement over a cli, why bother? Compared to a mature product like Cornerstone (a gui for svn), GitBox feels more like a toy than a tool.

Simplicity is key

Gitbox really helped me understand git. I do some things command line but its great to have a history that is searchable and even just a quick way to check what files were in a given commit. It handles multiple remotes really well and merging between branches took me a while to figure out but now i love it. If it was $10 id give it 5 stars.

Simple interface, but the help is a joke.

Ive been using Gitbox for a year or more, first as a free download from the authors web site, now as a paid version from the App Store. Im a single developer, and I use version control only to keep the history and sync the code between my 2 macs. I did not learn Git options and commands because I have simple needs. Once I decided to use branches, clicked Help, and found out that its on the web site and its only 1 tiny page. I use local and remote repos, and I had problems setting up branches, reverting some changes, deleting branches - and I could not get any help from the help file. The help file is really a joke. Was it so difficult for the author to spend a couple of hours on a better help page?

Remote branches arent removed

I love this application except that remote branches that have been removed dont disappear from the dropdown list.

Simple and elegant

I just love it! I use it in single user mode and it is perfect.
